I have written about productivity in the past…Productivity. Is this key? Or should this be banished from my goals during this phase of life with two little ones?
I read all the headlines: How to Get More Done in a Day. Maximize Your Mornings. How to Get Up Early. Organize Your Home. Declutter in a month. Write a Book in 30 days. (Seriously?) I see them and consider scheduling my next day accordingly. Sign up for every 30-day challenge you can find!
Then I look at my two daughters and reconsider. Does it matter that I have crossed 7 things off my to-do list by 8 AM? If they are my main focus, does it matter if I get anything else done?
Balance. It’s a balancing act that I’m trying to figure out. I want to get more done in a day, but not at the detriment of less quality time with my girls. How do I plan on doing this? Back in December I decided I would try to
- Get up early
- Add snippets of scheduled time to my day
- Waste less time
- Add efficiencies and organization to my day.
My starting point was to start getting up earlier than my girls, so I could have uninterrupted time before they woke up. I have been successful in making this early morning wake-up a habit and have not looked back. I have a Bonus Hour each morning and I love having a little time to myself each morning. Read all about it here: How to Enjoy an Early, Joyful, and Productive Morning.
I also wanted to add efficiencies and organization to my day, so I could truly ENJOY the unscheduled time with my girls. Too much of the time, I’m staring at what I need to clean, cook, and organize and it’s hard for me to sit down and give 100% of my time.
I do not always see homemaking the same.. Sometimes I see it as a wonderful way to serve and show love to my husband and children. Othertimes I feel like it is just a chore and a distraction to just enjoying our time together.
- I want to want to have a clean house, but I do not want to spend hours every day making sure every corner of my home is spotless.
- I want to have healthy, homemade meals, but I have no issues serving cereal for dinner on occasion.
- I want to put others before myself as we are called to serve, but I want to have time alone for myself to refresh and have a break.
- I try to provide clean meals. I love the idea of a toxin-free home and try first for natural products and remedies, but I refuse to worry about all of it. I’m OK with picking and choosing.
- I am disciplined about getting rid of clutter in some areas of my home, but constantly ignore other areas.
- I strive to give my daughters my full attention at times, but am also OK zoning out and doing my own thing when they are playing nicely. Especially if it’s been a hectic day.
Homemaking can be hard work when you are exhausted from chasing littles all day, but it is also very rewarding! I do not enjoy meal planning and am less than stellar at having a dinner plan. When I do plan meals out and have served my husband meals he has enjoyed, it makes me feel happy to know that the work is worth it!
Sometimes I figure out ways to better organize and plan my day and household, other times I look for a resource that will help me do this. I enjoy researching and finding new ideas for running the home.
I find it especially helpful to look for books, eBooks or other online resources when my homemaking motivation is running low. Often times I only need to read about a new idea, new recipe or quick tip to motivate me to get back into whatever task or chore I’m dreading.
