52 Week Money Saving Challenge

Are you familiar with the 52 Week Money Saving Challenge? I like the idea of a savings challenge, but I am not 100% on board with how it is set up. The typical plan challenges you to save $1 the first week, $2 the second week…until you save $52 the last week of the year. It’s a simple way to save an additional $1,378 in 52 weeks, but I do see how this can be a struggle when December rolls around.

Compare what you are saving the first 4 weeks of the year to the last 4 weeks of the year.

  • During the first 4 weeks, you save a total of $10. Average: $2.50 per week.
  • During the last 4 weeks, you save a total of $202. Average: $50.50 per week. 

Saving $2.50 per week is probably not a huge struggle. $50.50 per week may be harder to accomplish, especially considering that this takes place in December.

I created a 52-Week Money Saving Challenge Printable back in 2014. The original printable was for the year 2015, but now I have an undated version for you to use any year. You can start this challenge at any point throughout the year.

The original 52-Week Money Saving Challenge ($1 per week, $2 per week, etc.) results in a savings of $1,378 in a year. You will still end up saving $1,378 with this updated challenge, but it will be easier to save when you spread it out. 

If you do decide to start this challenge in January, this schedule will be much easier as you will be set up to save the least amount in December. You will save $110 during each 4-week cycle, with an exception of the last 4 weeks of the year. If money is tight in December, you will feel relief! This schedule asks you to save only $58 during the last 4 weeks. I am also including the reverse version of the original challenge. Save $52 the first week, $51 the second week…until you save $1 the last week. Pick the schedule that works best for you.

It can be easier to make saving a priority when you know what your goals are. Writing down your goals can make you feel more accountable. At the bottom of the printable, there is a place to write down your savings goal.

September Mini Goal: Reset Morning and Evening Schedules

This post is part of my 12 Mini Goals Challenge.

Small daily habits can make a big difference over the course of a few weeks, months, or even longer. In 2016, I am going to focus on a new habit or mini goal every month. In January, I focused on Daily Movement or Exercise. In February, I focused on cutting down on evening snacking. In March, my goal was 30 days of pilates. In April, my goal was to clear my kitchen counters every night. In May, I attempted to clear out my closet 3 items at a time. In June, my goal was to reset my mornings and wake up earlier. In July, my goal was to drink more water. In August, I wanted to track our daily reading.

As a stay-at-home mom, I have been able to make our own schedule for the past five years. Now that my oldest is going to kindergarten this fall, I will have to abide by a school schedule. This will be a big change!

I know that I will need to manage my schedule much differently as I am not used to getting my girls out the door early in the morning. This will not be easy on me. I will miss out on much of my morning alone time and I will have to be much more strict about bedtimes and morning routines. I will need to stop fitting in that One Last Thing that can make me late.

I am starting in on my September mini-goal early. I am going to force myself to schedule my evenings and mornings until I form the habits we need. I know that it’s key for my daughter to be well-rested and also have a non-rushed morning. Our mornings will go so much smoother and attitudes will be better if she doesn’t feel rushed!

I created a morning and evening schedule printable that I plan on using until I get a handle on our new school routine. Forcing myself to write on an actual schedule helps me plan my time better. I am less likely to attempt to fit in too much for the time allowed.

I know the importance of reading to children and reading has been key to my girls’ lives. We spend so much time with books. They love having books read to them and also enjoy looking through and “reading” books themselves.

I am realizing that during the summer months we occasionally have days where reading is not a priority. It’s hard to have a regular nighttime reading routine when we spend the after-dinner hours outside. Their evenings are spent running around outside and we often skip bedtime reading. I know that bedtime stories are a great way to wind down and have quality time together, but we don’t often do this during the summer.

There are other days that my girls are playing so well with each other that they don’t ask for books and I don’t think of it. I want to make sure that we make books a priority every day!

My August Mini Goal: Read daily to my children and track how much time we read each day.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has great information on the benefits of promoting early literacy and learning for your children. The Books Build Connections Toolkit has publications for various ages. The toolkits have information and tips to encourage families to read with their children. Go here to print or download the toolkits based on your children’s age.
